It is a generally a cool climate area but includes a broad range of microclimates and soil types. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are better suited to warmer areas of the Adelaide hills. Macclesfield is one such microclimate and is where Bendbrook Wines grow our premium shiraz grapes,(as well as some fine cabernet) ! Variables such as the aspect of the vineyard, soil type and clonal varieties of the vines means that individual vineyard characteristics provide exciting taste variations for the Shiraz wine maker. The terroir of Macclesfield is based on granitic micaceous schists associated with quartzite which produce well drained sandy loams of moderate fertility ideally suited to control the natural vigour of Shiraz. The vineyard perimeter abounds with wild blackberry and raspberry stands. Premium Shiraz from the Adelaide Hills is of remarkable quality showing peppery spice and fine-grained tannins. The Bendbrook Wines focus is on producing premium shiraz fruit with controlled yields, which is paying dividends with our premium Shiraz wines, distinguished by their intense rich cardinal colours and full earthy pepper, chocolate mulberry & blackberry flavours.
