• Company Name : Research Machines
  • About Us : Research Machines help teachers to teach and learners to learn. When we started in 1973, we wanted to make learning easy, fun and enjoyable. We're still doing that. And what's more, we design computers and software only for education. We listen to what teachers want and we look at the way students learn. Then we design systems to give them what they need. And we test them in the classroom, so we're sure they do the job properly.A bit about our historyWhen Mike Fischer and Mike O'Regan first started the company they supplied electrical components to hobbyists. Then, they started building machines for the scientific, research and education market and they called the company Research Machines. By 1977 they built our first school computer and we've been supplying ICT to schools ever since. So, you could say we've been involved with ICT in education from the very beginning. Now education is our only focus. And we're called RM. The company got bigger and the name got smaller!A bit There are over 2000 of us. Our head office is just outside Oxford and we've regional offices in Scotland and the North West of England. We also have a number of group companies across the UK, giving us wide geographical coverage and expertise in lots of areas of education other than ICT. And if you factor in our offices in the US, India and Australia, you can see we have a growing international flavour too. A bit about how we workThe education environment is unique. And schools, colleges and universities need the very best technology and services. Because of that, we work in partnership with as many people involved in education as possible, from teachers and LA advisers to construction and IT companies. That way, we make sure our products and services are exactly what's needed. As for our own experience, many of us are ex teachers and many more are currently governors of schools and colleges. We're even fortunate enough to have key educational thinkers like Professor Tim Brighouse and Sir Mike Tomlinson on our board, advising and steering us to make sure our educational thinking is sound. And let's not forget the 50-odd educational consultants we have working with schools to make sure the ICT is delivering great learning. A bit about our visionWe want to improve the life chances of people - worldwide - by delivering outstanding education products and services. That way, we can help teachers in their teaching and learners in their learning.A bit about the futureTeachers in UK schools have been using ICT to develop some of the most creative and independent learners in the world. And we're proud to have been part of this. But things don't stand still, especially in the world of technology.New mediums such as social networking sites, wikis, podcasting and blogging are quickly finding a role in education. As Professor Stephen Heppell said recently, "Whatever kids come to school with in their pockets, we mustn't expect them to power-down to get on with their learning."And that is how we think at RM. For example, we recently launched Podium, which we believe is the world's first dedicated education Podcast environment.Technology has the potential to fundamentally change teaching and learning forever - but only when it's applied with a real understanding of learning.By working with and supporting the people at the heart of education we aim to help them to do just that. That's Exciting Learning
